SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Department of Transportation has launched a new system that allows people to use their smartphones to track the location of snowplows in their area.
The Automated Vehicle Locator system provides locations for more than 500 snowplows on the state’s highways and freeways. It does not include county and city snowplow information on local roads. The new system can be accessed through the UDOT website or by using the UDOT Traffic smartphone app.
The system uses cell phone technology to transmit the snowplow locations online on the app and website. It also has a feature that shows users where plows have traveled in the last 30 minutes and alerts officials if one breaks down.
Transportation officials say the new system will help them better manage their resources.
