NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Audubon Zoo says a brown pelican is back in the wild after treatment for exposure to something oily in the Gulf of Mexico.

Spokesman Frank Donze (DON-zee) said in a news release Wednesday that crew boat members rescued the pelican Nov. 27 near Southwest Pass, and Humane Society of Louisiana director Jeff Dorson brought it to the zoo Nov. 28.

Zoo veterinarian Robert MacLean says the bird’s head and neck were wet, and the feathers did not appear able to insulate it. He says he and his staff washed it twice, moving it after the second bath to a big pen to exercise its wings and show it could get off the ground.

Donze says it was released Friday in a riverfront area behind the zoo.
