ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies in Richmond County say a man in jail on a murder charge is now accused of trying to have a witness in his case killed.

The Daily Journal of Richmond County (https://bit.ly/1ONgjq9) cites an arrest warrant which charges 54-year-old Karl Mathis Purcell with common-law solicitation of another to commit a felony.

The arrest warrant says Purcell was in jail for the death of 35-year-old Rebecca Priest McPherson, who was shot in the head on Nov. 22 and died the next day at a hospital. Investigators say Purcell and McPherson lived together.

Purcell faced an attempted murder charge which was upgraded after the woman’s death. He was denied bond.

In the latest charge, Purcell has a $1.5 million secured bond. It couldn’t be determined if he has an attorney.
