PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The Pierre Fire Department is reminding residents to be careful on the ice.

Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul says that even though much of the area’s lake and river water is frozen, ice stability can change quickly.

He says the stability can be changed by temperature, water current and the ice’s age.

The department says responders most commonly perform ice rescues for people who try to rescue a pet.

Paul says to report a pet on the ice rather than going after it.
