RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island say an employee at a Target store was attacked with a stun gun by an alleged shoplifter.

Riverhead Town Police say it happened around 4 p.m. Thursday when an employee tried to detain the woman at a Target store on Old Country Road in Riverhead.

Authorities say the employee believed the woman was trying to leave the store without paying.

They say that when the employee tried to stop the woman, she pulled out a stun gun and shocked the employee.

The suspect fled and the employee, whose name and gender was not released, was treated at a local hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Representatives for Target did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Police say no arrests have been made.
