CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Officials confirm that a tornado damaged several buildings, vehicles and trees in a suburb west of Detroit.

The National Weather Service says Thursday that Wednesday evening’s twister in Canton Township had an estimated wind speed of 90 mph and remained on the ground for three minutes.

Meteorologist Rachel Kulik says the tornado hit an industrial complex, causing damage to some of its buildings. A metal roof also was blown from a gas station.

Kulik says it was the first December tornado recorded in Michigan.

Consumers Energy says about 100,000 customers across the state remained without electricity Thursday afternoon as thunderstorms and wind gusts toppled trees, utility poles and power lines. Crews from five states are assisting with the repair and restoration efforts.
