BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - Authorities say one resident has been hospitalized and at least four others have been displaced by a fire at an apartment complex for seniors in Beatrice.

The fire was reported just after 4 p.m. Thursday when someone saw smoke coming from an apartment window. Firefighters rescued a man from inside the apartment. He was taken to a local hospital and then to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. His name hasn’t been released.

Authorities say fire damage was contained to the apartment’s bedroom, but there was smoke and water damage elsewhere in the building.

Fire investigators say the blaze was caused by a discarded cigarette.
