NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Police are investigating a Christmas Eve shooting at a North Charleston motel that left one man dead and another wounded.

Police spokesman Spencer Pryor tells local media outlets that the shooting happened about 3 a.m. on Thursday.

Two people were taken to the Medical University of North Carolina hospital where one of them, identified as 19-year-old Derek Burgess of North Charleston, later died. A 24-year-old man remains hospitalized.

Pryor says that Burgess went to the hotel for a date that he arranged at an online site. He says a woman let Burgess and another person armed with a pistol into the room. Two other people came to the room and shots were fired.

Police say the gunman fled the scene.
