COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) - December may have broken a record for rain at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend.

But people in the Coos Bay area will never know, because the airport rain gauge may not have been working properly.

The World newspaper reports (https://is.gd/m1SLGA ) the gauge recorded 14 inches of rain as of Dec. 20. That’s significantly less than the amount of rain recorded by several Bay area volunteers.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Sandler says they don’t have confidence the gauge is working correctly and there’s some missing data.

Volunteers recorded between 18 and 20 inches of rain for the same period.
