CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated after his car struck another in Suffolk County in a fatal accident.

Authorities said Christopher O’Brien entered the plea Friday, two days after the Port Jefferson man’s car struck another vehicle as he drove the wrong way on Sunrise Highway in Yaphank.

Police said the 54-year-old man seemed unsteady on his feet and was slurring his words when authorities arrived.

Thomas D’Eletto of Aquebogue died three hours after the 5:30 a.m. accident. He was 57.

Bail was set at $450,000 for O’Brien. A message left with the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County for comment was not immediately returned.
