BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - The price of a planned Gage County bridge may rise because of a requirement to redesign the span.

The Beatrice Daily Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1PpyHdo ) new federal requirements could force the county to redesign the new bridge, raising its cost by $8,000 to $10,000.

Designs for the bridge were completed in 2007, but new rating requirements were established the next year.

The county recently appealed a decision to require the new design, but the Nebraska Board of Standards rejected its proposal to stick with the old plan.

Highway Superintendent Galen Engel says that under either plan, the bridge could hold an adequate amount of weight.

The project is scheduled to be bid in 2017 with construction beginning in 2018.
