THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - The Thibodaux Christmas Bird Count is being reinstated and organizers are looking for volunteers.

The Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1YCAEsO ) the National Audubon Society-sponsored event will occur Jan. 2. Bird enthusiasts ranging from backyard bird watchers to seasoned experts are needed to help count birds.

Delaina LeBlanc, Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program’s migratory bird coordinator and an event organizer, says the count covers a 24-hour period, but volunteers typically count from sunrise to sunset - or as long as they’re able.

The Thibodaux event is one of more than 2,400 scheduled to collect data that researchers use to help track the status of bird populations across North America. The tradition dates back more than 100 years. Results have been used in at least 200 peer-reviewed articles.

Interested volunteers should email LeBlanc at [email protected]
