VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - A Vicksburg man and his son are dead from an apparent murder-suicide after a family argument at their home on Christmas day.

The home was destroyed by fire Christmas night.

The Vicksburg Post (https://bit.ly/1mGoqhH ) reports James Jarrod Wasson, 39, and 9-year-old Jim Wasson, were found in the home’s driveway Friday night.

Deputy Police Chief Bobby Stewart said both were dead from lacerations. Their bodies were taken to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for autopsies.

Stewart said police were called about a domestic disturbance about 9 p.m. and officers arrived to find flames breaking through the roof.

Stewart said Wasson’s wife and 7-year-old son escaped the fire. The woman had been beaten and was treated at an area hospital and released, he said. The younger child was not injured.

The argument, the deaths, and the fire remain under investigation, Stewart said.

Fire Chief Charles Atkins said firefighters were asked by police to wait before fighting the fire until the scene had been secured.

“They said they didn’t know if there was a shooter in building or someplace else on the property,” Atkins said. “They even searched in the woods behind the house.”
