MEDIAPOLIS, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say 131 piglets and 10 sows were killed in a fire at a southeast Iowa hog confinement.

The Hawk Eye in Burlington reports (https://bit.ly/1mcRuO3 ) that the fire at the Nelson Brothers Farm northeast of Mediapolis was caused by a shorted-out exhaust fire. Firefighters were called to the confinement around 2:45 p.m. Thursday and extinguished the blaze within minutes.

Mediapolis Fire Chief Jeff Kerr says the blaze could have been a lot worse. Departments from Oakville and Wapello also responded, which brought about 30 firefighters to the scene.

Kerr says an estimated 30 sows and 300 piglets were not harmed. He says the dollar estimate for the lost hogs is about $25,000, and the fire caused about $45,000 in damage to the building.
