BOSTON (AP) - Southern New England is preparing for its first snows after a mild start to winter.

The National Weather Service is predicting much of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut will see a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain starting Monday night.

The weather service says the storm will bring one to two inches of snow and sleet before eventually turning to rain. The greatest impact will be during Tuesday morning, with some areas seeing impacts into the afternoon and evening.

The storm comes as the region is experiencing one of its warmest Decembers on record. Sunday is approaching 60 degrees Fahrenheit in most parts of southern New England.

Parts of the northern New England states of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are already seeing significant snowfall this weekend.
