NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Louisiana State Police say the death toll is now five from a wreck last week in which a passenger train hit a car in New Iberia. One occupant of the car remains hospitalized.

Master Trooper Brooks David (DAH-veed) said in a news release Sunday night that 49-year-old Stephen Leblanc of New Iberia died Saturday. David says 12-year-old Chase Day died Friday.

Both were passengers in a car that was stopped on train tracks off Louisiana Highway 88 when the Amtrak train came through about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

News outlets report that Day’s twin brother was also critically injured and remained hospitalized.

The driver, 70-year-old Phyllis Leblanc, and 12-year-old girls Jayla Daigle and Trinity Schmidt died at the scene.

Amtrak says the crew and 119 passengers all escaped injury.
