SEATAC, Wash. (AP) - A King County sheriff’s spokeswoman says the bomb squad has detonated a grenade found near an elementary school in the city of SeaTac.

Sgt. Cindi West says a construction worker found the grenade in a box on a street corner Monday morning.

West says bomb technicians determined the grenade was real but upon detonating it in a remote location found that it contained no explosives.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cindi West said even though the device did not contain explosives it is a crime to “place a hoax device.”

School was not in session because of the winter break.

An investigation is under way to determine who placed the device in the area.
