DENVER (AP) - Police say a downtown Denver jail inmate who was found hanging by a bedsheet in his cell on Christmas Day has died.

The Denver Post reports (https://goo.gl/euFtMd ) 30-year-old Thomas Howard died early Sunday morning. He had been booked on a warrant out of El Paso County.

Howard had a long criminal history in Colorado dating back to 2010, including allegations in Colorado Springs of kidnapping, robbery and assault.

Simon Crittle, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, says deputies in the pod where Howard was being held check on inmates twice an hour.

Howard’s suicide comes as new sheriff Patrick Firman is trying to reform the department. His first big test came in November when 50-year-old inmate Michael Marshall died after an undisclosed incident in the downtown jail.
