ABINGDON, Va. (AP) - A $34 million improvement project to rebuild a busy interchange in the Abingdon area of southwest Virginia is set to begin next month.

The Bristol Herald Courier (https://bit.ly/1ZwS2fH ) reports that the project to rebuild the interchange at exit 14 on Interstate 81 is scheduled to start in January and conclude in the fall of 2018.

Earlier this month, the Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded the contract to W-L Construction & Paving of Chilhowie.

The project includes replacing the two interstate bridges over state Route 647, separating the northbound exit and entrance ramps and widening Old Jonesboro Road.

The project is designed to improve safety on the roads.
