COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - A barge that broke loose from moorings on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway has sunk, impeding water flow through a dam at Columbus.

Rick Saucier (SAW-sher) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it was one of two loose barges that were stranded at the Stennis Lock and Dam. One struck and damaged a gate but didn’t affect the gate’s operation. A second barge arrived later, coming to rest in front of the first.

The second barge sank Monday morning and moved below the first, affecting flow through the dam.

There was some concern that the impeded flow might cause flooding along Columbus lake, but no flooding was reported Monday. It was unclear when salvage work could begin because high, swift currents would prevent immediate removal of the barges.
