FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Officials say two middle school employees in Cumberland County are awaiting first appearance hearings on abuse charges involving assaults on students.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Sean Swain said in a news release that teacher Danny Mandell Pettigrew is charged with misdemeanor child abuse. He says safe school coordinator Terry Van Drake is charged with three counts of child abuse.

Both men work at Pauline Jones Middle School.

The news release says Pettigrew is charged with grabbing a student by the neck and throwing him against a wall. It says Drake is charged in connection with three incidents involving students being forced in or out of desks.

Both men were arrested Tuesday and taken to Cumberland County Jail. Swain says the men will be asked about attorneys at the first appearance hearing Wednesday.
