CINCINNATI (AP) - Authorities say a southwest Ohio sheriff’s deputy was hit by a car while trying to arrest a theft suspect.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Wayne Price tells WCPO-TV (https://bit.ly/1mMVmoG ) it happened Monday night after the Clermont County deputy got into an altercation with the suspect on Ohio Pike in Pierce Township.

Price says a passing vehicle hit the deputy as he was struggling with the suspect. The vehicle wasn’t involved in the theft investigation. Police say the driver stopped and is cooperating with investigators.

It’s unclear what the deputy’s condition is or what led up to the altercation. Authorities didn’t immediately identify the deputy.

Price didn’t say whether the suspect escaped.
