LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a driver who had fled from police later crashed his car into a tree, injuring himself and two passengers.

Lakewood police say the pursuit began around 1:35 a.m. Monday, when an officer tried to stop a car driven by Michael Carrier Jr. because it had an expired license plate. But the 24-year-old Jackson man allegedly sped away, and the brief pursuit was ended due to pedestrian traffic in the area.

Jackson police found the crashed vehicle a short time later. Carrier suffered minor injuries, while one passenger had a leg injury and the other suffered a head injury.

Carrier faces several charges, including eluding and driving with a suspended license. His bail was set at $25,000 and it wasn’t known Tuesday if he’s retained an attorney.
