HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Hilton Head Island and the surrounding county are contributing a combined $1 million for trees and shrubs to serve as a sound buffer for the island’s airport.

The Island Packet (https://goo.gl/zbu8zK ) reports that Beaufort County and the island municipality will contribute $500,000 each toward the barrier between the county-owned airport and the Palmetto Hall neighborhood.

The newspaper reports that the county, a panel of neighborhood residents and the Town Council approved the agreement this month after negotiations that lasted most of the year.

The agreement gives the county permission to trim some trees in the neighborhood that are near the airports flight path. A dispute over trimming the trees had lasted for years.
