HEADLAND, Ala. (AP) - A Headland couple faces several cruelty to animals charges after deputies found evidence one of their dogs had eaten another dog out of hunger.

Henry County Sheriff’s Lt. James Culbreath tells local media Quinton Mathis was arrested Tuesday and his wife, Ashley Mathis, was arrested Monday. They face several charges, including a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Culbreath says Department of Human Resources personnel had visited the couple’s house to take custody of their 4-year-old son. While there, they found four emaciated pit bulls in the backyard. Culbreath says deputies also found remains of a half-eaten pit bull dog inside the home near another pit bull dog.

He says investigators learned the family had moved out three weeks ago, leaving the dogs behind.

It isn’t clear if the couple has attorneys.
