BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore’s Washington Monument is being illuminated for the holidays.

The annual monument lighting is taking place Thursday evening. Organizers say it is the 44th year for the event, which includes entertainers, food, holiday activities and fireworks. Organizers say the entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. At about 7:45 p.m. a switch that lights the monument with nearly 17,000 lights will be flipped on, and a fireworks show will begin. Organizers say last year 7,000 spectators attended the event.

The monument re-opened this year on July 4 following a renovation. The monument’s cornerstone was laid in 1815 and its main column was finished in 1829 when its statue of Washington was raised to the top.
