SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island restaurant worker mistakenly shot by a police officer in 2010 is receiving a $1.5 million settlement.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1QgD7CO) Suffolk County approved the agreement Tuesday settling a lawsuit filed two years ago by 37-year-old Henry Morales.

Morales alleged his civil rights were violated after he was shot in the spleen and stomach during a car stop. His attorney, William Ferro, says his client was hospitalized for 15 weeks.

Court documents indicate Officer Luis Mangual was looking for robbery suspects when he pulled over a car with Morales inside. Documents say Mangual alleged Morales bent down and he shot twice through the window.

Ferro says Mangual asked to apologize to Morales after the settlement was announced.

A county spokesman says the settlement was the favored course of action.
