LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Lafayette authorities say a jailer has been arrested as detectives continue to investigate if he was involved in a conspiracy with inmates to harm another inmate who is a witness in an ongoing criminal case.

Sheriff’s Capt. John Babin said in a news release Wednesday that Deputy Calvin Powell is suspected of trying to transfer the targeted inmate into a jail housing unit that was occupied by several inmates who wished to do him harm.

Babin said the sheriff’s office started investigating the matter Tuesday, when they learned about the alleged conspiracy.

Powell was booked on counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice, conspiracy to commit intimidation, impeding or injuring witnesses, and malfeasance.

Powell was placed on administrative leave without pay.

Online jail records do not list an attorney for Powell.
