LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - The Lake Charles City Council has approved an ordinance to allow the city to move forward with planned improvements to Riverside Park.

The American Press report (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb) the decision came Wednesday after a lengthy discussion on the cost and funding of the project and how the park will be used.

The original responsible construction bid selected by the city — which included an alternate bid — was $1.2 million. City officials said the contractor recently reviewed the project to reduce its scope, resulting in savings of about $15,000.

Seventy-five percent of the cost of the project will come in the form of state funding as part of the capital outlay budget.

City officials have said the park improvements will include a community center and pavilion.
