NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - The mayor of Natchez will make multiple appearances on The Weather Channel next week while attending - and presenting at - a global climate conference in Paris.

Mayor Butch Brown is scheduled to broadcast for the channel from France, where he will attend the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, The Natchez Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1O5qE0h).

Brown said the channel contacted him a few weeks ago and said they wanted to have a representative from the global climate change conference to brief national audiences on what was occurring. He is scheduled to appear on the channel several times beginning Thursday through next week.

The mayor said he hopes to bring the unique perspective of a smaller community to the conference.

“I’m not an expert on climate change,” Brown said. “But I don’t think we can protect our planet by only letting the larger, industrial cities deal with the problems.”

Four mayors from Mississippi will attend the conference as part of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative.

Brown is also scheduled to give a presentation about the preservation of the Mississippi River watershed food production and the effects climate change has on food production on river plains.

Brown said he expects the presentation to be televised.

The Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative is privately funding Brown’s conference travel expenses. The conference will conclude next Thursday.
