WINNABOW, N.C. (AP) - Two men were arrested after being charged with poaching more than 1,000 Venus flytrap plants from Orton Plantation.

The Star-News of Wilmington reports (https://bit.ly/1Ozr9V4) Scottie Stevens and Davis Lewis are each charged with one count of felony taking of a Venus flytrap, 149 counts of taking certain wild plants from land and trespassing. Police say they found the two men with backpacks full of the carnivorous plants last month.

The charges against Stevens and Lewis are the first felony charges for poaching Venus flytraps in Brunswick County.

Dan Ryan of The Nature Conservancy says the plants that Stevens and Lewis attempted to steal will be replanted at Orton Plantation when the temperature is right.

The two men remain in jail. It’s unclear if Stevens or Lewis have attorneys.
