TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - More than a dozen county-issued garbage cans have been reported stolen in the Springhill, Auburn, Eggville and Lake Piomingo areas.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/1IqWeJs ) that at least 15 of the wheeled dumpsters were taken, and most thefts occurred Nov. 25-27.

The Lee County Solid Waste Department says the cans cost $52.56 each. Johnson says the theft of nine would be a total of $508.68 and push the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony.

To replace a garbage bin, homeowners must file a police report and take a copy to the solid waste office. It could take up to a week to have a replacement bin delivered.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
