HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police are investigating after a 17-year-old boy was shot in the ankle in a residential neighborhood in Hartford.

The Hartford Courant reports (https://cour.at/1Q2eyef ) officers were dispatched to the scene on Mather Street around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers found the boy and he was taken to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center with injuries that aren’t considered to be life-threatening.

A witness told police she dove on the floor of her apartment as shots rang out and then saw several people running.

Investigators surveyed the area and found several shell casings near an excavator in a nearby vacant lot.

The witness says the issue with violence on the block stems from drugs, which are being sold out of apartments that line the street.
