TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Tupelo police will return a cache of assault rifles and shotguns owned by the federal government.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1Nr6Eo9) the weapons - 22 M16 rifles, 10 M14 rifles and six 12 gauge shotguns - will be transferred to the Department of Defense Depot in Anniston, Alabama.

The guns were loaned to Tupelo through the Mississippi Office of Surplus Property, which pairs military surplus with law enforcement agencies.

Assistant Police Chief Allan Gilbert says the surplus weapons are also old. Most are from the Vietnam War era and one came in original packaging dated 1971.
