MILPITAS, Calif. (AP) - Santa Clara County officials say they are increasing security at a jail after a deputy was severely beaten by 10 inmates.

KNTV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1mpO4qp) that officials say a deputy at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas was trying to take a contraband item from a prisoner on Christmas Eve when the inmates punched, kicked, kneed and hit him several times.

Sheriff Laurie Smith believes it was a spontaneous assault by the first person, but believes the inmate is part of a gang whose members jumped in to help.

Elmwood is a minimum- and medium-security jail. Officials say they are planning to increase deputy staffing there and reduce free time for inmates.

The assault is the latest in a series of jail incidents being investigated in Santa Clara County.
