BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A man has been arrested in Massachusetts and charged with murder in the shooting death of another man outside bars in downtown Burlington over the weekend, police said Wednesday.

Chavis Murphy was arrested Tuesday night in West Springfield, Massachusetts, outside a restaurant near a hotel he had checked into since the shooting on Sunday, police said. Court papers said Chittenden County prosecutors have filed a charge of first-degree murder against Murphy in the death of Obafemi Adedapo.

Murphy was jailed and couldn’t be contacted by telephone for comment Wednesday. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Monday. It was unknown if had a lawyer.

The shooting happened as bars were closing along Church Street, a popular shopping and entertainment district. Court papers say Adedapo was shot after a dispute at the Zen Lounge over a woman, the Burlington Free Press reported.

Adedapo, who had been arrested 20 times in New York City on charges including robbery and assault, was known to the New York Police Department as a member of the Cashford Crips, a gang operating out of Brooklyn, Burlington police have said.

At the time of his death, he had crack cocaine in his possession, police said. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.
