PORTOLA VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old university student killed in a car crash in a small town south of San Francisco was the son of the town’s mayor.

Portola Valley Mayor Maryann Moise Derwin described her son, Charles Derwin, on Tuesday as someone who was “generous to a fault” and possessed a “unique wit.”

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://sfg.ly/1QZn2n5) that early Sunday firefighters were called to the scene of a single-car crash on Portola Road.

They found a car in the middle of the road engulfed in flames with significant front-end damage, the newspaper reports.

Woodside Fire Chief Dan Ghiorso says the Toyota Prius appeared to have crashed into a sign and tree.

No one else was injured.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the car crash.
