COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Diamond Stone scored 39 points, the most ever by a Maryland freshman, and had 12 rebounds, leading the fourth-ranked Terrapins to a 70-64 victory over Penn State in their Big Ten opener Wednesday night.

Robert Carter added 11 points for Maryland (12-1). Melo Trimble, the Big Ten preseason player of the year, shook off a slow start and had 10 points for the Terrapins.

Shep Garner scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half for Penn State (9-5). Brandon Taylor added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

NO. 5 VIRGINIA 71, OAKLAND 58

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Anthony Gill and London Perrantes scored eight points each during a 24-7 run to open the second half and Virginia pulled away for its 10th consecutive victory.



Gill led the Cavaliers (11-1) with 17 points, Mike Tobey had 16, and Malcolm Brogdon 12.

Kay Felder, the nation’s No. 3 scorer with a 26.6 average, had 30 on 10-for-22 shooting to lead the Golden Grizzlies (8-5).

NO. 7 NORTH CAROLINA 80, CLEMSON 69

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Marcus Paige scored 18 points to help North Carolina beat Clemson in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Joel Berry II added 16 points for the Tar Heels (12-2). They led 37-30 at halftime and by 16 in the second half before turning away the Tigers’ last best push.

North Carolina improved to 58-0 against Clemson at home, an NCAA record for most consecutive home wins against one opponent. Jaron Blossomgame scored 15 points for the Tigers (7-6).

NO. 11 IOWA STATE 104, COPPIN STATE 84

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Abdel Nader scored 21 points to lead Iowa State past Coppin State.

Deonte Burton scored 17 points for the Cyclones (11-1). They’ll open the Big 12 schedule at No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Josh Treadwell had 21 points for Coppin State (2-13).

NO. 15 DUKE 103, LONG BEACH STATE 81

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Grayson Allen scored 24 of his career-high 33 points in the second half for Duke.

Matt Jones added 21 points, Derryck Thornton had 18 and Brandon Ingram 14 in the final nonconference game for the Blue Devils (11-2).

They overcame some poor early shooting from 3-point range by shooting 65.6 percent in the second half, hitting 28 of 32 free throws and pulling away with a 25-6 run that bridged the halves.

A.J. Spencer scored 20 points, and Noah Blackwell had career highs of 19 points and four 3-pointers for the 49ers (6-9).

NO. 19 WEST VIRGINIA 88, VIRGINIA TECH 63

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Jevon Carter scored 18 points to lead West Virginia past Virginia Tech.

Carter made his first eight shots from the floor for the Mountaineers (11-1). They never trailed and won their fourth straight since a 70-54 loss to Virginia on Dec. 8.

Jaysean Paige added 17 points for the Mountaineers.

Shane Henry had 12 points for the Hokies (8-5).

NO. 24 SOUTH CAROLINA 78, FRANCIS MARION 56

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Freshman Chris Silva scored a season-best 13 points to help South Carolina beat Division II Francis Marion.

Mindaugas Kacinas added 12 points, and Duane Notice had 10 points for the Gamecocks (12-0).

Mike Davis Jr. had 17 points for Francis Marion (7-4).
