HOUSTON (AP) - Streets in Houston’s downtown theater district are closing to traffic as Texas’ largest city holds a New Year’s Eve celebration with fireworks and entertainment.

The 1970s-born group “the B-52s” is the headline act Thursday night at the annual New Year’s event that typically draws thousands of people. It’s winding up with a midnight fireworks show to bring in 2016.

Houston police Capt. Larry Satterwhite says officers on horses, bikes and canine officers will assist uniformed police to provide security. He says authorities have seen nothing to suggest the event has been singled out for possible problems but are being vigilant to ensure people get in and out safely.
