LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - An Anthony man who collected money to organize a youth T-ball team has been accused of embezzlement.

Dona Ana County Sheriff’s officials say 40-year-old Moises Martinez allegedly collected $1,100 in fees from 13 parents for registration fees, uniforms and t-shirts for the team of players ages 4 to 6.

Shortly after that, parents say Martinez began to cancel practices, didn’t produce any uniforms and didn’t return phone calls.

One of the parents reported the incident to the sheriff’s department, which launched an investigation.

Martinez surrendered to authorities and was booked into the county Detention Center on Dec. 1.

Sheriff’s officials say he posted a $3,500 secured bond the next day.

Parents of the children who signed up for the team reportedly began coaching the squad themselves with donated t-shirts.
