WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) - McDaniel College says it has received a $2 million gift in memory of a student who died of pneumonia in the early 1970s before starting his studies at the college.

The college, which is in Westminster, Maryland, said in a statement Thursday that the gift was in memory of Robert Lee Madison and that it will fund a scholarship in his name.

Madison was the only child of Miriam and Bill Madison of Bethesda. Robert Madison’s father died in 1991 and his mother died in 2009. The gift was from the estate of Robert Madison’s mother and her second husband, who died in 2015.

Founded in 1867, McDaniel College has 1,6000 undergraduates and 1,560 part-time graduate students.
