PHOENIX (AP) - A Mesa man convicted of trying to kidnap a young girl and attempting to have sexual conduct with a minor has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors say Jeffrey VanWagoner also was sentenced Friday to lifetime intensive supervised probation.

VanWagoner has been in custody since his January 2011 arrest.

He was accused of trying to lure a 9-year-old girl by asking her and a friend about a missing puppy.

Police say VanWagoner then pulled the girl into his car. The other girl rode a bike to the victim’s home and reported the incident to police.

Police say the girl wasn’t injured.

At the time of his arrest, VanWagoner was already a sex offender from a prior conviction for child molestation and sexual conduct with a minor.
