NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling on all government pension funds to divest from assault weapon manufacturers.

De Blasio said Friday that New York City pension funds have divested with the exception of the police, fire and education departments.

The mayor also says manufacturers should ensure that assault weapons are sold only to the military and law enforcement agencies, not civilians.

He referenced the mass shootings in San Bernardino, California and Newtown, Connecticut.

The mayor issued a written statement and made a similar call during an interview with WNYC.
