COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State officials are investigating the death of an inmate assigned to the Kirkland Correctional Institution in Columbia.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts told local media that an autopsy showed that 21-year-old Donnell L. Candya died Wednesday at Palmetto Health Richland hospital from head injuries.

Watts said the head injuries were not the result of a fall.

He said a final ruling on the cause of death will be released when the Department of Corrections and State Law Enforcement Division complete their investigation.

Corrections spokeswoman Stephanie Givens says Candya had been convicted in Horry County on a charge of possession a weapon. He had been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
