PORTALES, N.M. (AP) - A man has been indicted in the death of another Portales resident who authorities say was held captive, burned and beaten.

Prosecutors announced Friday that a Roosevelt County grand jury indicted 40-year-old David Smith on charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and two counts of tampering with evidence.

Smith is jailed without bond and prosecutors say he will be arraigned within 15 days.

Authorities say 45-year-old William Vaughn went to Smith’s home on Nov. 20 and an argument ensued between the two men.

Vaughn was alleged to have been severely beaten and then held in a locked room at the home for 24 hours before being taken to a Texas hospital.

Authorities say Vaughn suffered a traumatic brain injury and had burns and severe bruising over most of his body.
