SEATTLE (AP) - Seattle police say they found what could be a cockfighting operation in a man’s backyard.

Police say they were called to a man’s Rainier Valley home after he reported a burglary Thursday afternoon.

The man said he arrived at his house and found a teenage boy in his living room. The man told police the teen punched him in the face and ran from the home with a handful of stolen cash.

Police were unable to find the suspect but came across 42 roosters and hens in the yard that appeared to have been bred for cockfighting.

The man surrendered the birds to Seattle Animal Shelter officers. Police say shelter staff euthanized many of the birds due to mistreatment and breeding for aggressiveness.

The man is under investigation for animal abuse.
