NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A buoy that’s the size of a heavy duty pickup truck has washed up on New Smyrna Beach.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://bit.ly/1HKolmP ) reports the 19-foot, 3-ton buoy green buoy that came ashore over Thanksgiving weekend belongs to the U.S. Coast Guard. It was removed from the beach on Tuesday and is now at the Coast Guard station in Mayport near Jacksonville.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Anthony Soto says the buoy will be cleaned up and receive some maintenance. Then it will be taken to Ponce Inlet.

Officials say rough seas could have loosened the buoy from the chains that connected it to a large block of concrete.

Soto says it is uncommon but not unheard of for a buoy to come loose.
