ENFIELD, Conn. (AP) - The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating the death of an inmate at the Enfield Correctional Institution.

Officials said at about 3:11 p.m. on Friday, staff responded to a nonresponsive inmate believed to have been involved in a physical altercation with another inmate in the cell.

Officials said medical staff immediately began life saving measures. The inmate was transported to an outside medical facility, where he was pronounced dead at about 4:02 p.m.

The inmate was identified as 53-year old Charles Gattert of Prospect, Connecticut.

Gattert was serving a six year sentence for Risk of Injury to a Minor and had been incarcerated since September 26, 2012.

The Department of Correction and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death. An exact cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
