WASHINGTON, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say an apparently distracted driver veered into the path of a dump truck full of gravel and hit it head-on in New York’s Hudson Valley, killing the car’s driver and injuring an infant and toddler.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office says 32-year-old Edward G. Allen of Millbrook was killed in the wreck Saturday morning on Route 44 in the town of Washington.

Three-year-old Codie Allen and 1-year-old Tatum Allen are hospitalized. The relationship among the Allens isn’t immediately clear.

The sheriff’s office says Edward Allen’s 2006 BMW crossed the road’s center line.

The truck overturned from the impact, strewing the road with gravel. Forty-seven-year-old truck driver Richard Colesanti was uninjured.

Investigators believe Allen was distracted but don’t believe he was using a cell phone. They’re investigating further.
