AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A man walking around Akron with a rifle strapped across his back and carrying a gun says the weapons are for self-protection.

Daniel Kovacevic (kuh-VAH’-suh-vik) said Friday he doesn’t pose a threat to the law-abiding community and questioned why someone would take guns away from someone who bears weapons responsibly.

The 25-year-old Kovacevic says he’s never been a crime victim but started wearing a pistol about two years ago and added the rifle recently after he thought someone was about to steal the pistol.

Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards says police have received about eight calls from residents worried about Kovacevic after seeing him in their neighborhoods.

Edwards says Kovacevic is within his rights to carry the weapons in Ohio, which doesn’t prohibit openly displaying a firearm.
